Psychological & educational assessments

Due to the continued increased demand for our services and staffing limitations, our wait list times have significantly increased.

To manage this demand, we will temporarily close our waitlist for new referrals for Psychological Assessments/Speech Pathology.

Psychological and educational assessments are used by psychologists to assess a range of cognitive (i.e. thinking) abilities in both adults and children. At Play Therapy Melbourne we offer the most up-to-date, gold-standard measures of cognitive assessment, which is conducted in a gentle and supportive space that allows children to feel comfortable and achieve the most accurate result.

These are comprehensive, individually administered tools that offer interpretive power for a range of issues.

The assessments we currently offer include:

 

Psychological Assessments

  • Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) for ages 2:6-7:7yrs
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V) for ages 6:0-16:11yrs
  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) for ages 16:0-90:11yrs

These assessments are powerful clinical tools that assist with:

  • identifying intellectual giftedness or disability in adults and children
  • identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses relative to the individual
  • designing interventions at home or school where relevant

Educational Assessments

Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Third Edition (WIAT-III) for Preschool-Yr12 (4yrs-19yrs).

Often used in conjunction with the appropriate cognitive assessment, the WIAT-III is a powerful clinical tool that assists with:

  • identifying the academic strengths and weaknesses of a student
  • informing decisions regarding eligibility for educational services, educational placement, or a diagnosis of a specific learning disability.  
  • designing learning plans or other relevant interventions.

The process of cognitive assessment:

  1. Initial consultation (approximately 60 minutes) – in this session, comprehensive background information is gathered including developmental history, medical issues, academic issues (where applicable), social/family relationships and any other issues or concerns. This is to gain a holistic view of the child or adult to inform interpretation and recommendations as appropriate.
  2. Testing over 1 or 2 sessions – this will depend on the ability and willingness of the participant, as well as the types of assessments required.
  3. Scoring and interpretation – the assessment(s) will be scored and interpreted against standardised norms.
  4. Report writing – the background information, behavioural observations during testing, test results and consequent interpretations will be combined into a comprehensive report that includes relevant recommendations as appropriate, and
  5. Feedback session (approximately 30 minutes) – in this session, the psychologist will offer you the outcomes of the testing, the report and relevant recommendations for school or home.

The following fees cover all of the time required to complete the relevant assessment (including initial appointment, testing appointment(s), scoring/interpreting, report writing and feedback session):

  • Cognitive Assessment $ 1,715.28
  • Academic Assessment $ 2,144.10
  • Autism / ASD Assessment $ 2,575.92
  • Screeners / Other Assessments $ 214.41 (p/hr)

Assessments

THE WPPSI-IV AND WISC-V

The WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence) and the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) are the most common intelligence tests for younger and older children. The assessments usually take about 65-80 minutes to administer.

THE WIAT-III

The WIAT (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test) is an achievement test that measures how an individual is doing in areas of academic school work. The WIAT gives a summary of function in common school subjects like reading, math, written language, and oral language.

BASC-3

The BASC (Behaviour Assessment System for Children) helps us understand children's behaviours and emotions. It may be administered if it is suspected that your child's learning issues may be due to an underlying mood or behavioural issue. This form is filled out by the parent/carer on behalf of the child, and takes around 10-20 minutes to complete.
