Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a holistic approach aimed at improving you or your child’s quality of life and well-being and reducing the frequency and intensity of Behaviours of concern. At Play Therapy Melbourne we believe that quality behaviour support is built on the following principles.

  • Person-Centred: Focuses on the individual’s unique needs, preferences, and strengths.
  • Improvement of Quality of Life: Aims to enhance personal relationships, participation in community, and overall happiness.
  • Functional Behavioural Assessment: Involves understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviours through thorough assessment.
  • Support Plans: Develops individualised support plans that include strategies to teach new skills and promote positive behaviours.
  • Reduction of Restrictive Practices: Emphasizes minimising the use of restrictive practices and ensuring they are only used as a last resort.
  • Evidence-Based: Uses strategies and interventions that are grounded in research and proven effective.
  • Collaborative Approach: Involves working closely with the individual, their family, and other professionals to implement support strategies.

What is a Behaviour of Concern?

A Behaviour of concern is a behaviour that poses a significant risk to the safety or wellbeing of the person and those around them. This may include:

  • Physical Aggression
  • Verbal Aggression
  • Harm to self
  • Withdrawal
  • Property damage
  • Illegal activities
  •

How do I know if I’m Funded for Behaviour Support?

Our PBS services exist to support you and your support network to understand, prevent and respond to behaviour of concern in a safe way that improves your child’s quality of life. The NDIS is a strong advocate of Positive Behaviour Support and funds this kind of support through the Improved Relationships section of your NDIS plan.

There are two-line Items that are packaged together to fund Positive Behaviour Support:

  •  Specialist Behaviour Intervention support (SBIS) – This funds the development of your plan, including interim planning, Interviews, assessments, observations, and the creation of the Behaviour Support plan.
  • Behaviour Management Plan – This fund the training of parents, support staff, and other key members of your child’s network of Supports, in the implementation of the support strategies contained within the behaviour support plan.

In addition to improved relationships funding, in some cases, there may be alternative funding pathways to support you to gain PBS supports while you wait for Improved relationships funding to be added to your plan.  Through this pathway we can support with interim safety planning and assessment reporting to support the application and plan review process.
